How To Build A Garden Planter Bench / Maintenance Free Planter Boxes / DIY Outdoor Furniture

In this video tutorial, I will show you how I built these planter benches as a way to also fence in my vegetable garden. You can build this out of different kinds of materials, such as cedar, pressure-treated lumber, or composite decking like I do in this video. Composite decking is the most expensive of the three, but it requires absolutely zero maintenance. If you’re using wood, you will have to paint or use a clear coat every year to protect it from the elements. The length of the project that I have here in this video is 39 1/2 feet. It includes six planters and five benches. The braces are functional, but the curved feature is for aesthetics. You can build these planters without the curve as well since that feature does require additional tools. If you’re interested in buying the plans just know that at the time of posting this video this project (using composite decking) cost me about $1800(northeast US prices). If you want to save on the overall cost, you can use pressure-treated wood and save you about half.

    Enjoyed the video. I have all your tools and more but your project is more than I need. Just a 2x10 to fit in the GM slots with a couple of tie-downs. During the recent power outage in Houston (May 2024), I was carrying propane tanks to and from several locations to get them filled or exchanged so I could run my generator. Using your idea, I will be building something to make hauling my tanks easier in the GMC 2012. And yes, I have several 3D printers. :)

    • @ArtisanMade

      Fire clay is powdery. I adding sand make it easier to level the bricks

    A full round dome is only a UA-cam phenomenon - it creates a burning point on the oven floor. This mistake is due to the “UA-cam smart tool” holding the bricks. Italian ovens is more flat and has a variable radius. Top height - 48-50cm …stack up bricks, make a plate divide it in 3 or 4 so they can get out later on through the pizza opening, then use wet sand to shape up your dome - the wet sand will hold your bricks as well. Super easy.

    • @ArtisanMade
      @ArtisanMade 4 дні тому

      You’re talking about Pompeii style ovens and they are great, especially for pizza. Not all oven designs are shaped in this way. The rounder shaped ovens like mine are Tuscan ovens. The reason why so many people on UA-cam build them like that is because many of us are not experienced masons and these are much easier to build. The “UA-cam smart tool” existed long before UA-cam. I never liked the sand method for constructing the dome and this is not what the pros do either.

    No PPE? Prescription glasses are not safety glasses, you're making Norm sad. Also, a loose fitting hoodie while using a table saw that lacks both a blade guard and a riving knife is terrifying. Tools are great, but PPE is the most important set of tools you can buy.

    I’m a retired engineer and have been a woodworker for many years. I have done and redone dust collection facets many times over in my shop. I just bought a 3d printer for the purpose of learning a new craft and to supplement my woodworking. I am learning Fusion 360 and recently printed out my first object … a modified dust port for my Rikon bandsaw. I’m impressed with your video as well as your printing and design skills. And I’m grateful that you are generous and make your files available. Thank You ! John D.

    Great video! Question, if you are finishing the basement should you use pressure treated wood? Just concerned about the fumes from the wood' s chemicals. Can pine be used? I would have liked to have heard more on how you determined the framing dimensions.Thanks in advance for the feedback!

    • @ArtisanMade
      @ArtisanMade 13 днів тому

      If the wood has repeated contact with moisture you should use pressure treated. I’m no expert in the science but I think with such a small amount of lumber it’s not a concern.
